Where you will go In the northern regions, the Ngorongoro highlands will lead you from the Ngorongoro crater, a UNESCO heritage site, to Lake Natron at the foot of the active volcano Ol Doinyo Lenga. You will then climb the 4566 m of Mount Meru, the second highest in Tanzania
Day 1. Arusha
Arrival at the airport, meet your guide and transfer to Arusha (about 1 hour by road). If you have time and you are not too tired you can take a tour of the city or (optional) a walk through the plantations on the slopes of Mount Meru, with a visit to a village.
Day 2. Ngorongoro crater
Early in the morning we will arrive in Karatu (about 2 hours) where we will be able to visit the colorful market, a great way to get to know the life of the inhabitants of this area. Immediately after we will leave (about 1 hour) for the Ngorongoro Crater, the true garden of Eden, declared a World Heritage Site because of its extraordinary beauty and for the very high concentration of wild animals (all the big five: lion, leopard , elephant, rhinoceros, buffalo) and the highest density of lions and other predators across Africa. The peculiarity of the Crater is that many animals of different species live in perfect balance in the space of 20 Km in diameter, and it will be easy to see the lion lying down to sleep near the zebra and the gazelle. Dinner and overnight on the edge of the crater.
Day 3. Nainokanoka - Empakaai crater
Beginning of the trek that will take us from 2000 m of the main crater to 1000 m of Lake Natron. Today I meet the guides and their donkeys in the village of Nainokanoka and 7 hours of walking through the sweet plateaus rich in unmistakable green-blue coloring. Overnight camping on the edge of the Empakaai crater.
Day 4. Empakaai - Nayiobi - Acacia
Descent into the crater of Empakaai through the mountain equatorial forest to the lake lying on the bottom and ascent. Trekking on the Masai paths through the woods to the Nayiobi village and Acacia, where we will spend the night camping under the picturesque "yellow" acacias. If it is market day we will walk side by side with the Masai.
Day 5. Acacia - Ol Doynio Lengai - Lake Natron.
We descend along the grass-covered lava hills, where the erosion of the water has created spectacular landscapes, up to the foot of the active volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai, the sacred mountain of the Masai. This volcano erupts a lava based on sodium carbonatite which takes on a white color when it is cooled and is very friable. The furrows carved by the water and the white slopes that look like snow give the volcano an unusual appearance. Finally we will arrive at Lake Natron. Short trek going up the stream to the falls. Overnight in Engaresero.
Day 6. Lake Natron - Arusha
Almost on the border with Kenya, Lake Natron is 58 km long and ... 50 cm deep, acquiring reddish colors in some areas. Waterfalls, active volcanoes and parched landscapes make this section of "rift" truly amazing. At dawn we will leave on foot (4 hours on sandy soil) towards the lake and its flamingos, which in some months of the year come here in thousands to lay their eggs in complete tranquility. Lake Natron, in fact, has a level of salinity and a temperature that makes it inaccessible to any predator. During the return to Arusha we will be able to visit a Masai village (boom). Overnight in Arusha.
Day 7. Trekking Monte Meru: Momella Gate (1500 m) - Miriakamba Hut (2514 m)
Transfer to the Arusha Park which protects the incredible variety of vegetation and fauna on the slopes of Mount Meru. Beginning of the Monte Meru trek: departure with guide, ranger, cook and porters from the Momella Gate (1500 m), through forests, pastures, waterfalls and animals (including eagles, vultures and many species of rare butterflies) to Miriakamba Hut where We spend the night.
Day 8. Trekking Monte Meru: Miriakamba Hut (2514 m) - Saddle Hut (3570 m)
Continue through the mountain forest, populated by buffaloes, elephants, white and black colobus, some species of antelopes and composed of trees and vegetation of great variety and you reach Little Meru (3820 m), the second peak of Mount Meru, from where you can admire the impressive rift of the Rift Valley, the Momella Lakes and the majesty of Kilimanjaro. Overnight at Saddle Hut.
Day 9. Trekking Monte Meru: Meru Summit (4566 m)
In the early hours of the day we will leave to reach the tip of Mount Meru and enjoy the incredible sunrise show from up there. Up here of the many animals only a few species of gazelles will remain, skilled on the now exclusively rocky terrain. Immediately afterwards the descent will begin to return to the Momella Gate (1500 m). Overnight in the Arusha Park.
Day 10. Arusha park
Safari in the lake area, the ideal habitat for many species of water birds that make this park different from all those in the area. You will see various species of monkeys, Cercopithecus, Baboons, Blue Monkeys, and the black and white Colobus.
Transfer to the airport for the return.
