Day 1. Dar es Salam
Arrival at the airport and meeting your guide. If you have the time and wish to, you could (optional) have a guided tour of the city centre. Dar es Salaam is the economic capital of Tanzania, alive and busy with commerce.
Day 2. Mikumi Ntional Park
Mikumi National Park. Setting off at dawn (approx 7 hours by car) for Mikumi National Park. We'll cross the fertile fields near Morogoro where many of Tanzania's cereal crops are grown and by afternoon reach the park where we'll go on a game drive. The park is bordered by a chain of mountains and is able to offer a huge variety of wildlife which is easily seen in the limited space including: elephants, buffalo, wildebeest, zebras, giraffes, lions, crocodiles, hippopotamuses, antelopes, and gazelles.
Day 3. Udzungwa Mountains National Park
The rainforest slopes of Udzungwa Mountains go from 1500 m to 2500 m and are the perfect place for those passionate about both trekking and botany. They host 2500 plant species some of which are endemic, 400 bird species, 250 butterfly species and 11 different species of primates, of which 2 are endemic. The only way through the thick vegetation is on foot, but the effort is more than paid off with the natural beauty of the forest, its panoramas and waterfalls (the highest being 270m).
Day 4. Iringa
Transfer (7 hours) across southern terrain with roads winding through high hills and skirting the banks of the Little Ruaha River for a bit of the way. The amount of baobabs in this river valley make for a truly spectacular sight. This part of Tanzania extends over an enormous surface area but is not at all touristic. In fact the road we travel on is the only one there is and the local population still leads a simple basic lifesyle. It all gives the impression of a wild existence in the heart of Africa.
Day 5. Isimila
Not far from Iringa there's the Isimila stone age site, an open air archaeological site with rock formations eroded by wind and rain to form sculptures in the form of thin rock towers. The site has always been of interest to man and many unearthed finds date back to between 60,000 and 100,000 years ago. On the road again in the afternoon (3 hours by car) till we reach Ruaha National Park.
Day 6. Ruaha National Park
This is Tanzania's largest park, renowned for its uncontaminated ecosystems, harsh landscapes and breathtaking scenery. The Ruaha River flows through it all year round and provides different habitats, flora and fauna. There are large populations of elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes and zebras, as well as other animals usually difficult to see in the North, such as the Lesser and Greater kudus, the African wild dog, and the antilopi fulve e nere. There are 480 bird species and at special times of the year some of the rarest migratory birds can be seen, such as the near-threatened Sooty falcon. The Roan and Sable antelopes can also be seen and both are extremely rare.
Day 7. Ruaha Nathional Park
Second day of photografic safari in the park. Meals and overnight stay in or near the park.
Dayo 8. Transfert
(Optional return by airplane to Dar es Salaam). Long transfer (8 hours by car). If there's time we'll stop on the way and visit the Neema Crafts Centre in Iringa, a vocational training centre for young disabled people with a shop selling beautiful crafts, workshop areas, an award winning cafe, a conference centre entirely staffed by deaf people and a welcoming guesthouse. The Diocese of Ruaha plays an active role in providing initiatives to help the local population of Iringa. Overnight stay near Mikumi National Park
Day 9. Dar Es Salaam
Return (7 hours) to the financial capital for the return flight or for the extension to Mafia Island: if you want to be sure to have seen the best of this part of Africa, then you absolutely cannot miss this pearl in the Indian Ocean.
